Looking for the perfect family vacation spot in Ghana? A place that caters to both children and adults alike, offering endless exploration opportunities? Well, let me share the highlights of our recent family getaway to Aborigines Beach Resort.
Aborigines Beach Resort is a beachfront resort located on the pristine shores of Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana.
The resort offers more than 10 rooms with prices starting from Ghc700 for standard rooms, while family rooms are priced at Ghc1500 per night. Guests have the option to choose from bed and breakfast, half board, or full board packages.
Aborigines Beach Resort features a dedicated area for kids to play and unwind. Additionally, the resort has a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a bar for guests to enjoy.
For those seeking adventure, the resort offers a variety of fun activities such as quad biking, kayaking, canoe rides, boat trips, and horse riding, ensuring an exciting experience for everyone.
Now to our trip:
We are a family of four, so we booked the family suite, featuring a queen-sized bed and a connecting room with a bunk bed. At the time of booking, the rate for bed and breakfast was Ghc1500.
Day 1:
We arrived in Keta on Monday, 3rd January 2023, and checked into our room. After settling in, we enjoyed breakfast (priced at Ghc65 per person) and that was only because we arrived earlier. Breakfast is usually inclusive in the room price. We took some time to rest, and then embarked on our adventure.
Our first destination was The Chill River Resort, situated in Anyanui, about an hour's drive from Aborigines Beach Resort.
The road leading there is a mix of tarred, untarred, and dusty surfaces, but the journey is undoubtedly worthwhile.
Chill River Resort is also an excellent spot for families, but we'll talk about that later.
Initially, I was provided with an activity card, with Ghc 100 as the entry coupon for food and drinks. However, upon arrival, we were charged Ghc50 each. (It's advisable to call and confirm current prices before your visit).
We were guided to the restaurant, where we ordered a selection of meals for lunch. The food menu, while somewhat limited, offered options like tilapia, soup, banku, kelewele, and rice.
The Chill River Resort is spacious, providing ample time for a leisurely stroll and exploration while awaiting your meals.
In terms of activities, The Chill River Resort offers water sports, including canoe kayak, pedalos, mangrove safari boat ride and local outboard boat ride.
There's also a playground for kids.
Following our lunch, we continued to explore the surroundings, played some golf and later returned to Aborigines Beach Resort, where we called it a day.
Day 2:
Do you recall that I mentioned earlier that our accommodation included bed and breakfast?
Well, for day two, we opted for an à la carte breakfast. This meant that, with fewer guests in the lodging, we were provided with a form offering various breakfast options to choose from.
After breakfast, we took some time to rest, slept, strolled around, and later in the day, headed to our second destination - Keta Emancipation Beach.
Often regarded as the cleanest beach in Ghana 🇬🇭, Keta Emancipation is just a 10 to 15-minute drive from Aborigines and within walking distance from the Keta market.
The menu options were somewhat limited, and even with what was available, choices were scarce. My brother and dad settled for fried rice and jollof, which they found to be just okay.
Afterwards, we had some drinks, and I highly recommend trying their local beverages. You can inquire about Lamugee, Sobolo, or Asana, but do note that only one or two of these options might be available. Entrance to Keta Emancipation Beach is free, and swimming is not permitted.
Feel free to relax, play games, or even take a nap on the beach.
Visiting Keta Emancipation was undeniably refreshing, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone exploring Keta.
Later in the evening, we returned to Aborigines and placed an order for some food, which took a while (I was quite famished 😮💨). We enjoyed seafood fried rice, egg fried rice, and plantation fritters, also known as Kelewele.
And, of course, in the evening, we strolled to the beach for some quality family time before calling it a night.
Day 3: Departure
The night before, we completed the forms for the à la carte breakfast and informed them we would have it at 9 am.
Upon arriving for breakfast, only one person's order was ready, so the three of us had to wait.
When it was my turn, I was informed that there was no Tom brown available, despite ordering it the previous night. I opted for cornflakes instead.
I really wish they could bring all the food at once, especially since it's a family, and it's nice to start eating together. We faced the same issue yesterday as well, but anyway.
After breakfast, we prepared to depart for Accra.
GETTING AROUND KETA
If you have a private car, navigating is straightforward with maps and by asking locals for directions.
For public transportation, you can seek assistance from the reception staff to arrange a taxi, especially if you're a family of four. If your group is larger, I recommend either getting two taxis or requesting a minivan.
Taxis are the most common mode of transportation.
CONCLUSION
I’d recommend Aborigines Beach Resort for a family trip out of Accra. It could be during the weekend or the holidays. However you should note that prices are slightly higher on weekends.
For food, menu wasn’t really limited but sometimes what you want isn’t available. I loved their chicken pizza though.
Overall I’d rate this experience a 5/10 just because there were certain things that could have been avoided and I hope with the feedback we gave, management would do something about it.
Also be cautious of the receipts given to you, always recalculate and check it against what you actually ordered.

My mom's personal review:
"On the whole, the experience was satisfactory. The staff were accommodating and allowed us an early check-in. The room was quite clean and appliances were working. Clean beach. The resort grounds are pleasant and food was okay. I won't recommend the pickup/drop off services. We did not get what we paid for and ended up being squashed in a small vehicle with no air-conditioning. Cross check your bill if your expenses were charged to your room"
